Bringing your own food has multiple benefits the way I see it:
- You get healthier food. Most restaurants load their food with fat (oil) and salt. They are more concerned with flavor (not that healthy food needs to taste bad) than health. Restaurants also tend to give huge portion sizes.
- You know what is in your food. It's unlikely the place you grab your lunch time noodle bowl lists ingredients in a meaningful way.
- You save money. When I grew up eating out was a treat that we looked forward too. Today people seem to eat out more than they eat at home. I eat at restaurants way more often now than I did as a child growing up but I know that my dining out is infrequent compared to the average North American that uses their kitchen mostly for boxed cereal and beer.
Brown bagging your lunch is a big first step in adopting a healthy lifestyle and will create massive beneficial change. It will also go a long way toward challenging the belief that eating healthy is too expensive.
